Blog #8 :) Thoughts
I don't think this is the last blog that I write because I have found the excitement around writing. I very much appreciate Mr.Herbst's idea to bring this interesting activity to the class. Now I feel more confident to share different topics with my friends in English that I have hesitated to do in a long time. Although my posts maybe not correct, they help me improve my writing ability day by day. I will miss our class and the time that we share our ideas about a certain topic together. I hope I can read more about your life in colorful activities. Also, I will write more in various things of my life, if you have time to "stop by" my blog, please share with me your thoughts. Thanks a lot and see ya.

Blog #7: TED Talks
Summary of " How Industrialization Changed Childhood" - Dorsa Amir
https://www.ted.com/talks/dorsa_amir_how_the_industrial_revolution_changed_childhood/up-next
According to the article "How Industrialization Changed Childhood" by Dorsa Amir, the difference between "free-range" children and "structured" children make us think about better ideas to have tried-and-true methods of children's development. First, Amir gives us an idea about "making strange familiar and the familiar strange". This idea is reflected in the contrasting evidence of the U.S. culture and Schwar's. Schwar children can climb the high trees, start fires themselves to prepare their food without parents, and use machetes in a skilled way, which are similar to the way people develop in thousand-year of human evolution. That's the reason why a similar feeling came to her when she was in Schwar, but the familiarity of the U.S. culture became strange to her. In addition, the author states the importance of the natural improvement of small-scale societies to develop independent children. Their mothers give natural birth, breastfeed frequently and share their room with kids. Kids are more freedom in physical contact together or people of all ages. These processes may help them build various skills. Last but not least, the decisive factor in human development is a lifestyle not genetic. Children can learn by themselves in getting surrounding information. Life's experiences help them become successful adults with social skills, creativity, and problem-solving. These ideas are not only applied to children but they are also used to adults by making mistakes, expanding the communication environment and giving ourselves some unstructured time.
This article makes me think reminiscing of my childhood and have some common and divergent views with it. I feel lucky because I have grown up in a natural way with a big family. However, I still think that if I could receive more guidance or supports, I might achieve my goals sooner. I total agree with the author's idea within limits and proper direction to have a better result for children's development.

Holiday Observations
Halloween is a great holiday in the U.S. for children. I did not do anything on that day, but I still enjoyed it. It likes a costume party. A lot of people wear and makeup to look different than their daily days. It was so surprising to me for the first time when I saw they brought their makeup to go to school, which is opposite to my country, people just wore their makeup to hang out in the Halloween night. Children also go around to collect candies from their neighborhood and relative.
Other holidays are also coming soon, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. They are big holidays in the U.S. People prepare to decorate their houses, buy the Christmas tree and gifts for friends and family before a month. The atmosphere of Christmas holiday in the U.S. is as exciting as that of Tet holiday in Vietnam. This is the warming time to bring everyone back together, a time to meet relatives and friends. Theses days mark the end of a year with blossoming success and signall a beginning with new peace and happiness, every member in a family always wants to be together in these time, enjoys delicious meals and gives each other goos wishes and gifts. Whereas, every shopping mall in the U.S. is so crowded with its great deal, the price of all things in my country are increased on any Holiday and usually never go back to the original price.

Blog #6
I wonder that what should I write today? Freewrite is the confusing topic :))
I think I will tell you about my jet lag story that I was very confident I won't never stuck with. It's my challenging trip last 2 weeks. It took 10 days to travel included 2 days' flight; in the same time, beside my jobs, I needed to keep up with my online course, turn in quiz and prepare to my tests on the week when I came back. I tried to be used to different time zones by sleeping as much as possible on the plane, but I was still asleep the whole week after. I seemed as a zombie moving from place to place in that time (haha). It was time-consuming to return my daily activity habits but not less interesting because I know it is worth. Luckily, I finished all of my tasks step by step although they aren't 100% perfect. For me, it is a good experience to change my mind about time arrangement and the way to make it work.

An English nursery rhyme says that boys are made of "snake and snail and puppy dogs' tails," while girls are made of "sugar and spice and everything nice." What indirect, or unconscious, gender identity instruction is being given through this rhyme? Can you give examples of similar rhymes or proverbs in your language or culture? What indirect gender identity instruction do they provide?
___________
Boys and girls are totally different genders that is the natural law of the universe. According to the legend, God forms Adam, who is the symbol of boys, from the dust of the ground and places him in the Garden of Eden where he needed to cultivate it and take care of it. So he needs to have good health and acumen like the snake. Besides, he should have strength and stamina as the snail; furthermore, the faithfulness of dogs is very necessary. That means men should be strong, decisive, patient and honest. On the other hand, Eva, is a symbol of girls, is created from one of Adam's ribs to be Adam's companion; she does not need to do anything but adds spice to Adam's life by being nice and sweet. Therefore, there is an English nursery rhyme says that boys are made of "snake and snail and puppy dogs' tails," while girls are made of "sugar and spice and everything nice.
In my country, there is a similar proverb that describes the beauty and nobility of girls is "Aristocratic blood girls". In addition, "Big macho boys" is the proverb that says boys should be strong, honorable and chivalrous.
In my opinion, all of the above rhymes and proverbs are good statements to describe identity instruction although there are different ideas about equality between men and women.

Blog #3: Confessions
Confession time: Write about a time you got in trouble as a child. What did you do? How did you get caught? Did you learn anything from the experience? If you never really got in trouble, you could tell us about something you did, but didn't get caught, or you could talk about someone else who got in big trouble. Check below for my story...
There were a lot of remark memories while I have grown up. One of them is an "accident" playing the game online :)) I had never played any video games or game online until I went to high school. In the last summer of middle school, after we finished the final exam, my close friend who is interested about computer or game invited me to play a dancing game- a hottest one at that time. I was fascinated by the great moving cartoon character on the screen.
In the beginning, everything seemed very ok between my study time and playtime; my grades were very nice, and I enjoyed the game so much. However, that didn't last long; in the second semester of the 1st year in high school, my grade was so surprising to everyone - including me. My parents still believed when I lied to them that I was not used to the new teaching speech in high school. One day, after a crazy time in blowing games, I came home too late and found out my parents had waited for me to have dinner together. I was guilty and regret what I make them worry about.
I tried quitting playing game and got back to study hard. It was not an easy time for me, but it helps me get into a habit about recognize and be brave to get above temptations.

Cast into the Wind
This proverb "Write the bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble" makes me think of the dreamy melody of "Cast into the Wind" song, which I have heard from my father's cassette player since I was a child. Behind the simple statement is a big lesson of happiness that people learn and practice every day in whole life.
Beach is always beautiful by itself with huge white sand and beating waves on the shore which rub out all of the footprints to keep the surface always be smooth. Being generous as a beach's heart; getting a feel of all things happened of the world around us just that moment. Forgetting anything makes you do not feel good as wash footprints away in the sand, and just remembering the new lesson on the bright side we can learn from. Besides, we should save every awesome thing by writing down on the piece of marle, a nice material from the sea, and keep it as a real gem, the good luck charm for us to make our life be happy day by day.
Keep your mind always fresh and full of the joys of spring ... to cash into the Wind :)
If you have time, please you listen to the dreamy melody of "Cast into the Wind" song.
This is the short part of "Cast into the Wind" lyric:
To live one’s life
One needs a heart
To what end, do you know, my love?
To cast into the wind
To cast into the wind
The wind blows and clouds ride over the river
As the day rises or evening falls in its vastness
The heart drifts away as time passes
A shadow propagating words of truths
When evening falls
One needs laughter
To contemplate with the falling leaves
Floating away in flowing water
Floating away in flowing water

Introduce myself
Hi everyone! My name is Thao Tuong, and I come from Viet nam. I am one of the good Vietnamese girls in the U.S, especially at OCC <haha>. I have lived with my family in Westminster, Vietnamese's little Saigon, since I came to the U.S 2 years ago. In fact, I was not sure that I could come here until the last 2 months when I had a successful interview; therefore, all my friends knew the rumors about my settlement just under the wire. They claimed why I did not tell them sooner; they were shocked, and we embraced together warmly for saying goodbye. I miss them so well. Now, I'm getting adapt to the new lifestyle here and feeling much better than a year ago. I will work well with my timeline schedule so I have enough time to go back to Viet nam to see them.
I have a love of designing; I want to make something fun, nice and helpful. I also love Maths, so I choose Mechanical engineering, which is very interesting in my thought with a lot of detail items, to study.
I think I am a romantic girl. My friends usually bring me back, for sometimes my idea goes so far :)) I love eating ice cream on a raining day while listening to a love song; especially, I will be over the moon if I could enjoy those things in a snowing day. ;)
